Patients are needed to participate as members of a Patient and Family Advisory Council. This Council will be an engaged component of a research team working on a 4-year study that is focused on improving the experiences of patients and their caregivers at end-of-life.
- Experience with or is currently navigating end-of-life care for themselves
- Individuals dealing with frailty themselves. Frail individuals are those more likely to be hospitalized, need long term care, or die. These individuals are also more susceptible to large declines in health from minor illnesses such as the flu or falls.
RESPECT is short for Risk Evaluation for Support: Predictions for Elder-life in the Community Tool. It is a tool that calculates survival based on diseases a patient has and how difficult it is to care for themselves. The RESPECT calculator can be used to inform discussions about end-of-life care. This research team is focused on involving patients and their informal caregivers in both personalized health and end-of-life research, developing and validating predictive algorithms for end-of-life, creating personalized end-of-life patient decision aids, evaluating the effectiveness and cost-effectiveness of personalized end-of-life patient decision aids, and developing a learning health system infrastructure to support ongoing personalized end-of-life care. We are looking for 6 members to advise the team and help with research activities, such as designing and co-facilitating focus groups with patients and caregivers with guidance and support from the research team. Commitment includes participation in 1.5 hr. meetings (4/yr) and up to 2 hours of meeting preparation/meeting debrief. Additional time commitment (12 hrs) involved for those members interested in co-facilitating focus groups related to perceptions of personalized end-of-life patient decision aids.
We plan to follow the honorarium guidelines as set out by the Strategy for Patient-Oriented Research (SPOR) Working group of $25/hour.
